The Mangsang Camping Site in Donghae, which led Korea¡¯s auto-camping culture by hosting the first World Camping and Caravanning Rally in 2002, had evolved into a popular national destination. However, a massive wildfire in April 2019 destroyed 20 buildings (50 rooms), 18 auxiliary facilities, and 7 hectares of pine forest. Junglim Architecture provided the masterplan design pro bono for the resort¡¯s restoration, with Junglim CM overseeing the completion. The masterplan maintains the context of the original facilities, using low-rise structures that are in dialogue with the sea and forest to create an atmosphere distinct from typical high-rise resorts. Buildings are arranged in a long, wave-like formation to ensure ocean views for all units, a layout that also allows for flexible future changes. To counter the Yangganjipung, the strong seasonal winds of the East Coast that contributed to the destruction of the previous wooden structures, concrete and limestone were chosen as the primary non-combustible materials for the new buildings.
